The Draft Strategy on Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources 2015-2020 aims to achieve sustainable energy and heat energy production, energy efficiency and sustainable energy supply by the broader application of alternative and renewable energy sources. The "Strategy" targets have been adapted to the European Union's 2012/27/EU Directive on Energy Efficiency.

RE targets: 
According to the strategic plan, it is planned to build 2,065 MW solar power, 512.5 MW wind, 515 MW biomass, 60 MW of Small Hydro Power Stations and Geothermal Thermal Power Plants by 2020. Azerbaijan has set the following targets for the development of renewable energy by 2020: The share of ARES [Alternative and renewable energy sources] in the production of electricity - 20%; The share of ARES in total consumption - 9.7%; The established capacity of the ARES - 2,000 MW.
