Overall Summary:
The Rural Development Strategy of Georgia 2017-2020 sets out the vision of the government on the country's rural development over the period 2017-2020. The Strategy seeks to strengthen the climate change adaptation efforts, particularly in the agriculture and forestry sectors, and to increase the use of renewable energy sources, including hydropower.
Access
Energy access targets:
Electricity supply: Currently, more than 99% of the population of Georgia has access to electricity. In the future, it is planned to provide electricity to those remaining parts of the population still not supplied (a few households located in the extreme highlands) via alternative sources drawing on the results of feasibility studies. --- By 2020, about 70% of the population of Georgia will have access to natural gas.
Renewable Energy
RE priorities:
Hydro-electric power is an eco-friendly source of electric power and ensures the energy security of the country and, at the same time, is one of the chief means for the development of regions. In addition, the infrustructure around the hydro-electric power plants, including water ponds and reserviors, may be used for the development of rural tourism.
