^{_{Improvement of nuclear knowledge base - JAEC’s initiative to increase public understanding of nuclear energy -}}

At the G7 Ise-Shima Summit held this year, the leaders declared, “it is also crucially important to engage the public in science-based dialogue and transparency to inform policymaking.”

Japan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) has launched an initiative to assist public’s deeper understanding of nuclear energy. According to the JAEC’s view states, every person should have a chance to deeply understand and reasonably judge future policy of nuclear energy based on scientific basis and objective facts, then which help building a consensus.

In the JAEC’s opinion, 

・In addition to promoting public relations such as media and interactive dialogue, 

・it is important to build knowledge-based Information network by internet. This information network enables people to search and trace a certain information according to their interests by themselves.

However, in Japan the latter approach does not sufficiently work. It is difficult for general public to easily find out the information they want and deeply understand it because relative information is scattered and has little relation between them. In addition, only offering scientific basis and objective facts is not enough for general public to understand them, and it is necessary to offer explanations of them to help people’s understanding.

So along with relevant organizations such as Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and the Federation of Electric Power Companies (FEPC), JAEC are planning to piece together scattered information based on scientific basis and objective facts and to improve retrieval function of internet to offer explanations for general public of scientific basis and objective facts.

JAEC will continue to consider for increasing public understanding of nuclear energy.
