Overall Summary: 
The Water Code of the Republic of Tajikistan aims to ensure the sustainable use of water resources for the needs of social and economic development. In response to existing water-related challenges, the policy seeks to improve the national environmental system through introduction of measures on abatement of water pollution. Art. 7, 31 and Chapter 12 address a number of crucial issues across the energy-water nexus. The Water Code strengthens frameworks for utilization and management of hydropower resources in the Republic of Tajikistan.
Renewable Energy
RE priorities: 
Art. 7. Pursuant to Law of the Republic of Tajikistan №744 of 28 June 2011, renewable sourced electricity facilities shall be put into operation.
RE capital subsidy, grant, or rebate: 
Art. 31. The Code introduces an incentive scheme for renewable energy. Fee exemptions for utilization of water objects are made for consumers of renewable energy.
Environment
Energy-water nexus: 
Chapter 12 ‘Use of Water Bodies for Industrial Purposes and Hydropower Generation’. The operation of water bodies for industrial purposes shall be carried out in compliance with the established norms and standards on utilization of water resources. The policy underscores the need to reduce water consumption, improve sewage treatment systems, introduce advanced water technologies and water supply schemes (applying water-conserving technological processes, turnover water supply rotation and other technologies). --- Art. 84 ‘Rights and Obligations of Hydropower Enterprises on the Use of Water’. Hydropower enterprises have the right to 1) use water resources for power generation; 2) ensure that the physical and legal entities observe the rules on utilization of water reservoirs for hydropower generation purposes. ---Enterprises are obliged to: 1) observe the regime of operation and filling of water reservoirs; 2) ensure free passage regime and safety for water transport, boats; 3) maintain fish preservation facilities; 4) protect water flora and fauna; 5) ensure stable and safe operation of water facilities, prevent breakdowns during floods and natural disasters.
Governance
Energy management principles: 
Art. 84 ‘Rights and Obligations of Hydropower Enterprises on the Use of Water’. Hydropower enterprises have the right to 1) use water resources for power generation; 2) ensure that the physical and legal entities observe the rules on utilization of water reservoirs for hydropower generation purposes.--- Art. 52 provides for damage payment caused by hydraulic engineering works and termination of water use agreement in accordance with rules set by the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan. ---Utilization of water bodies for the needs of hydropower generation shall be based on consideration of broad cross-sectoral objectives, unless specific environmental objectives are pursued by the national regulatory bodies. Water reservoir operation shall be coordinated by a mandated state agency overseeing utilization and protection of water resources in the Republic of Tajikistan
