The legal framework for nuclear energy in the Republic of Kazakhstan is laid down by the present law. The policy seeks to intensify efforts and reinforce steps necessary to protect the environment, eliminate existing nuclear dangers associated with radiation and proliferation of nuclear weapons. Since the entry into force of the Law, a number of amendments have been introduced. To reinforce the present Law, comprehensive policy actions were proposed by the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Radiation Safety of the Population adopted in 1998. In 2015, draft of a new Nuclear Energy Law was issued by the Lower House of Kazakhstan’s Parliament – the Mijilis.
Environment
Energy environmental priorities: 
The policy considers environmental issues and highlights major concerns with respect to the usage of nuclear energy. Art. 12 establishes legal framework for nuclear and radioactive security. Among policy tools designed to ensure protection of the population health and the environment is licensing. The Law introduces a comprehensive set of standards and rules for the operation of nuclear facilities, and with respect to activities on nuclear power generation. Art. 18 specifies requirements for nuclear operators. --- Art. 13 stipulates that the principles of radioactive waste management are in line with the Environmental Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The policy seeks to ensure coherence with relevant regulations on treatment, conditioning and storage of radioactive waste. --- Art. 3 underscores that the import of radioactive waste to the territory of Kazakhstan is prohibited.
